I love hedges and there are some great old ones in my neighbourhood – some with crisp lines and some overgrown in undulating curves. My front garden has a patchwork hedge, it changes with the seasons but at this time of year is a riot of colour – peachy orange japonica, white and mauve lilacs, crab apple blossom, magenta beauty bush and blousy creamy pink roses rambling through it. Reminds me of New York fashion designer Anna Sui’s clothes -a little bit romantic nostalgia and a little bit rock and roll glam.

Thank you for leaving a link to this post on Peonies & Posies – your hedge sounds beautiful! I love the concept of a ‘patchwork hedge’ – do you know what type of roses are growing in it? When & how do you prune the hedge so as to preserve the flowers? I might need to plant a new hedge in my garden & love the sound of the variety of plants you have in yours.
Hi Julie, the hedge is an old one so I take no credit for the planting and alas aren’t sure what the roses are. We just trim it with a hedge trimmer about twice a year – after the lilacs have flowered and then when the japonica gets out of hand! Our approach is sometimes haphazard – my husband would says more by good luck than planning!! And if the roses are still flowering we’ll selectively prune the other bits. This all sounds like lots of work but that is not the case – it might sometimes look a little unruly but in a lovely wild way. It is also beautiful in autumn with the leaves turning.
