Bobbles & Pom Poms

I don’t have a wattle tree in my garden but  the wattle trees around my neighborhood are out in a blaze of yellow. The ‘fluffy’ flowers are a ‘sunny’ sight even if the day is not. I have an old jumper which is hand knitted in a stitch that makes little bobbles  and when I see the wattle it reminds me of this.

On my last visit to Sydney I looked through my mothers old knitting patterns and found a 50’s vintage one for a beret – I’m not a knitter so mum volunteered to have a go at making one. This morning she emailed to say it’s finished! – I just need to make and add the pompom which I’m thinking of creating in some faux fur instead of a wool.

I’m crossing my fingers it arrives in time to take away on a shack weekend  – perfect for winter beach walks. And I wonder what flowers I’ll find on the east coast of Tassie at this time of year?

PS. Thanks mum!

Harbinger Of Spring

This week it feels like winter has turned a corner. That harbinger of Spring – the jonquil is out and I picked a bunch intent on creating a design for my Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe but seduced by the scent I couldn’t bring myself to remove the flowers from the stems so popped them in a vase instead.

The bergenias too are sweetly scented and are creating a swathe of pink near the sandstone steps in my garden – an abundance of blooms for vases and garden fairy dresses.

Morning Tea & Fairy Dust

A little friend had a fairy party to go to so I made a fairy skirt out of some left over tulle & satin from my niece’s formal dress and some flowers for her hair.

The tulle is sprinkled in silver glitter – which leaves a slight trail like fairy dust – I can still see the odd twinkle in my workroom despite it being swept!

This morning I’m going with the ‘little fairy’ out for morning tea, so I’ll get to see her wings and perhaps she’ll leave a trail of fairy dust we can follow back home.

I’m a novice at drawing on my iPad – too many other wonderful things to do with it and look at that I rarely play around with the drawing apps I have.

If I was a New Years resolution kind of person I might have made one to make more time to master it but hey there’s lots of things it would be nice to have more time for!

Roses Of Winter

Hellebores have many names – Christmas roses, Lenten roses and Winter roses – which is the name that makes most sense in a southern hemisphere winter garden.

Mine are just starting to show their colours and a favourite is  the speckled petals of the pink with just a hint of green that I’ve used in this Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe design.

I also love the deep aubergine and green ones which I created designs for in two posts last November – Ugly Chic and Hippy Chic – take a look and let me know your favourite.
