Pussy Cat Pussy Cat Where Have You Been

vintage postcardI discovered this postcard amongst some things at my mother’s house last year.

Sent to my grandfather when he was five, it’s postmarked December 23rd 1917 and the handwritten greeting from an aunt is delightful.

With good intentions of letting those playful kittens deliver a Christmas greeting again I photographed the card so it could arrive in a very different type of mailbox via this blog – 100 years after it was first sent!

I pondered where one of our petal & pins greeting cards may turn up a century on from now and thought it was the perfect example of why a handwritten card will always be so much more meaningful than tapping out a text.

So my apologies for it being belated –  I hope you had a jolly Christmas and Best Wishes for 2018!

A Playful Dash of Festivity

This years petal & pins Christmas Collection I designed with geranium flowers from the garden.

From window boxes in Paris to Australian gardens, these bright happy flowers add a playful dash of festivity – and perfectly suit a summertime Christmas!

I had fun stringing our petal & pins gift tags and some sprigs of geranium flowers  above the mantle piece in the studio earlier in the week – the first festive trimmings to appear at our place.

We added petal & pins wrapping paper with this collection – it was exciting to see it develop from an idea to the finished product and branch out from just greeting cards.

The Christmas Geranium Collection is available at selected stockists and from the petal & pins online shop…and for classic with a twist, take a look at the Holly Dress greeting cards from my Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe®

Xmas Eve

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

I decided to design a collection of festive holly dresses for my Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe for Christmas and this of course meant planning ahead and gathering the holly in our Southern Hemisphere winter when the berries would be red.

I don’t have a holly tree in my garden  but there is one growing on the nature strip further up the hill. When I noticed there was a liberal smattering of red berries I armed myself with secateurs and a bag to gather some sprigs  to design with.

My Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe Christmas Collection consists of five holly dress cards with festive red envelopes and inspired by some of the  classic fashion capitals of the world, a Christmas greeting in French, English and Italian is on the back. The inside is blank to write your own message. They can also be used to decorate the home, turning a mantelpiece into a garden fairy catwalk or  strung on ribbon.

I must say holly is not the most hospitable plant to work with, the points of the leaves are so sharp – it must be a deft bird indeed who feasts on the berries but I think the results are quite stylish don’t you?

Back in winter, when the berries were red, I created my garden fairy several holly gowns with Christmas in mind and chose this one for a special festive edition card.

Early in December I took my Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe collection to the market. Although my Petal & Pins stall was quite petite I wanted something else to have alongside my card sets and decided to make origami doves that I strung on fine gold thread.

The cards and the doves proved so popular that I never got to send any of the holly dress cards myself and needed to make more doves to use for my own festive decorating.

We have had house guests over christmas including ball obsessed Oscar the Groodle so the safest place for my glass baubles was in a vase rather than dangling tantalisingly from the tree.

With the addition of a branch and some of my origami doves it made a striking centrepiece on the dining table on christmas day and now graces the cocktail cabinet ready for New Years Eve festivities.
