Vintage Niche Market – Design & Wine.

Niche is held three times each year in Launceston, the heart of the Tamar Valley wine growing region in Tasmania.

Saturday March the 18th Niche is celebrating ‘Vintage’: the time of year when grapes are harvested and our wineries start serious production of the region’s famous cool climate pinot, riesling and sav blanc varities.

petal & pins is joining other Tasmanian designers + makers and a small selection of wineries representing the Tamar Valley Wine Route to celebrate and 20% of all sales goes to support childrens disability service St Giles.

Peace, Joy & Dessert

Basket of garden rosesPeace Roseroses in the gardenI’ve been cutting big bunches of roses to have inside this spring and admiring ones that vie with each other for attention from behind fences when strolling down the road.

My basket is laden with  a trio of Rosa ‘Madame A. Meilland’ or Peace rose – in Italian, Gioia  – meaning joy. I don’t know the name of the pinky red one, it was already growing in my garden, planted long ago and the blooms get pinker the more open they become – any suggestions from a keen rose grower?

The peace rose in bud reminds me of that classic dessert Peach Melba with it’s raspberry coloured streaks and since my raspberry patch is looking pretty fine this season too I’ll have to put it on my summer entertaining list!

When Old Is New Again

If your wardrobe is anything like mine it is easy to lose something – it gets pushed to the back where it doesn’t rub shoulders with the favourites and can easily be forgotten.

And then one day you reach for that particular hanger and are met with a pleasant surprise. Like this rhododendron dress from my Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe.

I created it in October 2012 using flowers from a friend’s garden after a fun day of rhubarb plants, tea cake and gin & tonics.

In Rhubarb & Rhododendrons – inspired by that day – you can see another style rhododendron dress which became part of my Spring Gala card collection.

Today we are getting together to bottle apples from my garden. I’ll resist serving cake as we are joining another friend later for dinner but a gin & tonic might be a nice reward when all the apples are peeled and done.

And I think this dress I’ve unearthed from the back of the wardrobe might just be my new favourite!

Refreshingly Festive

We just had a weekend of perfect summer days.

Saturday we had lunch on our new deck and on Sunday went to afternoon drinks at a friend’s place.

The sunny weather inspired me to make a punch and my friend had the perfect punch bowl.

She also has borage growing and the flowers made a pretty addition to my concoction – it was festive and refreshing!

Both days were warm enough to linger outside into the evening (a novelty in Hobart even in summer).

I’ve decided this summer should be ‘the summer of punch’ – I must plant some borage in my garden…
