One of the things I love about stepping out in a big city is the fabulous window dressing you see.

When I was in Tokyo this mens shoe store display caught my eye, it’s deceptively simple but carefully and artfully arranged.

The suspended writing (a play on pinstripes?) gives a sense of movement and the nonchalant lean of the umbrella is positioned just so that you can almost sense an imaginary hand resting on the handle.

I photographed a Melbourne window display back in 2014 that also used script in a clever way, appearing in reverse you needed to look at the shadow to read it.

Anyone care to have a go at deciphering what the scribbly man says?!

Being in a different city is always fun and although there wasn’t time to go exploring when we were in Melbourne last month for the trade fair the walk each day back and forth to the Royal Exhibition Building from our air bnb pied-à-terre was down Gertrude St Fitzroy with it’s wonderful and eclectic shops.

Always closed at the times we were going past we could only window shop and take pictures – but the great restauarants, bars and cafes were, so we ate well and after four days we had some new favourites we hope to get back to on our next visit!

Pop!

Salamanca Pop Up shop Hobart, Tasmania

petal & pins + amanda sheen jewellery pop up shop at Salamanca Arts Centre

We opened the door to the petal & pins + amanda sheen jewellery pop up shop last Thursday.

It’s located in the lovely Salamanca Place inside an old stone warehouse – we’re having fun ‘keeping’ shop, meeting locals and interstate and overseas visitors – so thank you if you’ve come in for a chat and browse!

We’ve also been selling bunches of spring flowers picked and gathered each morning, they make the outside of the shop really pretty and add a burst of colour to the pop up shop bicycle basket.

Open every day until the 5th of October at Space 008 Salamanca Arts Centre, Salamanca Palace Hobart.

100 Seasons

I’ve always loved strolling past or into a fabulous flower shop, what passionate flower lover doesn’t!

Long before I started creating my miniature flower couture I would take photos of flower shops that caught my eye on holidays, Flowers Vasette was one and I have a photo taken of their storefront from about twenty years ago.

So it’s not surprising that in the fledgling beginnings of petal & pins I declared I would love to have my cards stocked at this iconic Melbourne florist and we were excited in March this year when that wish came true!

Recently in Melbourne for Life InStyle we were staying in Fitzroy just down the road from Flowers Vasette so we made a visit to their beautiful shop.

I took these pictures of the wonderful abundance of flowers and our Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe cards on display and bought a bunch of pink runuculus – often referred to as the rose of spring – to help make our apartment feel like home when we got back from long and busy trade fair days.

A recent trip to Melbourne was a bit longer than the usual weekend jaunt and it made for a more leisurely pace with time to catch up with friends and do some different things.

Mr Petal & Pins and I spent the weeks leading up to going excitedly plotting where we wanted to eat and shop, adding new places to our list of favourites.

Going to La Belle Miette for a box of macarons has started to be a bit of a tradition – one I’m quite happy to cultivate.
Choosing flavours, not to mention which box requires careful consideration!
My posts Macarons Memories & Momentoes and Spilt Wine show how I like to repurpose the boxes.

Taking advantage of the sunshine we took a stroll through Fitzroy Gardens and it brought back memories of a childhood visit when my family drove down to Melbourne and took the boat across to Tasmania.

The impetus for the whole trip was to see jazz singer Stacey Kent and her band in their first and only Australian concert so on the last evening we walked from our apartment across the river to the Melbourne Recital Hall.

It was a wonderful concert, delightful and very special to hear her sing live. It left a spring in my step (and her tunes in my head) for days and it’s now on my wish list to see them perform again sometime somewhere.

Before flying home the next day we hired a car and went to Heide Museum of Modern Art which I have been keen to get to for a while now.

A feature of this rockery is the experimental espalier across the facade of three Silver Princess trees Eucalyptus caesia. It is designed by Australian artist Fiona Hall and is the second artist’s garden commissioned by Heide.

It was raining so we didn’t spend a lot of time exploring the gardens but lingered in the gallery and had lunch in the cafe.

It was the perfect way to round out our mini vacation – food, friends, fashion, music and art.

I’ve already earmarked an upcoming exhibition for a return trip to Heide, hopefully on a day that lends itself to a picnic in the gardens.

And then there was the cocktails at New Gold Mountain… we might have to start a new tradition.

The Enchanted Florence

For ten days at the beginning of September the David Jones department store in Elizabeth Street Sydney celebrates the arrival of Spring with a fabulous flower show, now in its 28th year. The whole of the ground floor and all sixteen of the stores windows are given over to exquisite themed displays of flowers.

By chance in one of those earlier years I happened to be strolling past late at night with my ‘serendipitous’ friend when final touches to the displays were taking place. We stayed and watched, mesmerized by the activity within as three metre tall branches of magnolias were put in place.

The last two Septembers I have visited Sydney perfectly timed to see the David Jones Spring Flower Show – this has been purely coincidental but I’m now planning to mark it permanently on my calender.

This years theme – ‘The Enchanted Florence’ – takes inspiration from the iconic colours and patterns of the designer Florence Broadhurst. More than 300,000 flowers from all over Australia were used in the display and the result was magical.

These are just some of the photos I took – maybe you will be inspired to plan a September trip to Sydney too.

Strolling around the Quadrilatero d’Oro in Milan last summer I took some photos of the fabulous window displays.

This Blumarine one caught my eye not least because of the fabulous clothes but also the great bag adorned with raffia flowers – it reminded me of the ‘flower loom’ I was given as a child and still  had tucked away somewhere at home.

A year on and the idea of playing with my flower loom was lost amongst all the other inspired ideas from my trip – until last week when I was looking at Edwina’s blog re:retro.

It wasn’t difficult to remember where the flower loom was stashed and I even managed to unearth some raffia – just enough for one flower!

Until I get a bigger supply of raffia I created myself a virtual bag.
