After the Solstice

winter vase

vase of bergenias, hellebores, jonquil and camellia buds & leaves

For a couple of weeks before the winter solstice my garden seems devoid of flowers and then after it seems like each day something new appears in bloom.

It starts with a smattering of jonquils and then a patch of snow drops. I can begin to gather tiny bunches of violets and the hellebore buds start to open.

But it’s the bergenias and swamp iris that make a real statement with their pink and purple splashes of colour throughout the garden. They invoke an air of anticipation although there is a good two months to go until Spring.

When the sun’s out and the temperature agreeable it’s a great time to be in the garden which is just how I spent my Saturday with Mr Petal & Pins.

I think my garden fairy might be related to Cinderella – she only ever seems to have one shoe!

See others from her collection here and here.

Love-in-Idleness

I know these tiny tri-coloured violas as heartsease.

You may know them by the name tickle-my-fancy or come-and-cuddle-me or jack-jump-up -and-kiss-me or love-in-idleness.

Or perhaps another name?

Purse Project #2

Following my Purse Project last year using my Kaleidoscope Garden photos I decided to make one for myself using some of my Garden Fairy’s Wardrobe designs.

Choosing just which four dresses was the most difficult part!

Aphrodite’s Garden

Legend has it, the Goddess Aphrodite created aromatic oregano as a symbol of joy and grew it in her garden on Mount Olympus.

It’s in flower at the moment in my garden and there’s ample for cooking and creating.

I’m joining Cathy from Rambling in the Garden for ‘In A Vase On Monday’ today.

The purple flowers I’ve used have randomly spread throughout the garden and perhaps someone can identify them for me.

I’ve chosen bottles I’ve repurposed as vases for today’s arrangements. The green one once contained puréed Italian tomatoes and the clear short one is a balsamic vinegar bottle so it seemed fitting to photograph them in front of my Venice window.

What is my Venice window you may ask?
When our neighbour built a deck that lessened our privacy through the end of our sunroom I came up with a more creative solution than curtains or a blind.

Mr Petal & Pins and I have a soft spot for Venice and its beautiful architecture so we went through our holiday pics and chose one of a window in Palazzo Pesaro Croce – The Galleria Internationale d’Arte Moderna. The proportions were a perfect fit for the window shape so we resized the image, got it printed and voila – our Venice window!

It still lets the light in and when lazing on the daybed at the other end of the sunroom we can make believe we’re in our own palazzo!

Memory & Myth

I can picture exactly where the Salvia Leucatha grew below the window of my parents bedroom in the front garden of my childhood home.

Drawn to both the colour and the texture I loved the purple spires of velvet flowers on silvery stems – perhaps an early hint of a vocation with the tactility of textiles.

Family myth is purple was one of the first words in my vocabulary and it’s still a favourite colour.

When I walk past the patch of salvia that spills onto the pavement down the road and  lightly touch the velvet flowers it immediately takes me  back to childhood days in that garden.

Tutu

As a child I called Fushias ‘ballerina flowers’.

The pretty petal tutus and stamens like slender legs in pointe shoes dangling on the bush a joyful delight to small eyes and hands.

My garden now is perfect for Fushias – I have several varieties flowering at the moment – and just sometimes I’m still drawn to pause and  make a flower pirouette in my hand!

Sweetpeas

I love the scent of sweetpeas and the abundance of colours they come in.

I came across some growing in a park in Sydney – warmed by the sun the sweet smell permeated the air and drew me to where they were growing –  reminding me I must find a sunny spot in my own garden for them.
